Dispute Resolution plays an integral role in higher education. For example, we are experiencing an existential moment in higher education – a time in which many of the “traditional” realities of campus life are being reshaped in profound ways, including, for example,
- The demand for a new business and revenue models capable of ensuring long-term viability.
- Increased competition for student enrollments.
- Demographic shifts on campus that require a deeper understanding of diversity and inclusion across all constituencies.
- The development of academic programs, degrees and certificates that will enable our students to succeed in a 21st Century economy.
The pace and complexity of these changes very often create an environment in which inter-personal and departmental conflicts arise. However, such conflicts are neither inevitable nor unmanageable if we (a) understand how to identify the factors that contribute to conflict; and (b) utilize the tools that will improve interpersonal communications and enable us to better manage conflict over the long term. Absent effective application of essential dispute resolution tools, prolonged conflict can be costly, compromise productivity and morale, and impede the attainment of strategic goals.
As CCN principals, our deep understanding of higher education and significant experience in the management of complex issues at the leadership level, has positioned us to provide effective facilitation of campus disputes across all departments and at all levels of decisional authority. In addition, we work closely with boards, campus leadership and faculty in the design of professional development programs to assist in the prevention and/or better management of those factors that lead to conflict. We also provide in-depth leadership coaching for campus leaders, focused on leveraging an individual’s skills and strengths to enhance one’s supervision and communications across all constituencies.
