Collaborative, competent, creative. These are the words that have guided my over 30 year career in dispute resolution. While I have held academic positions during those years, I have also maintained a private practice in dispute resolution. My experience encompasses mediation, training, dispute resolution design, expert witness testimony, and one on one conflict coaching.
My experience includes the following:
*elected the first female chair of the Wisconsin Judicial Council in 1990
*served as the chair of the Wisconsin Judicial Council’s ADR Committee from1990-93 which
drafted Wis. Stat.802.12 (referral) and Wis.Stat.904.085 (confidentiality)
*founded and directed Marquette University’s Center for Dispute Resolution Education in 1993
which received over $1M in federal and state grants
*founded and directed Marquette University’s Graduate Program in Dispute Resolution, which included an interdisciplinary master’s degree and graduate certificate from 1995-2015
*taught Mediation, Advanced Mediation, Advanced Issues in Mediation, Dispute Resolution Theory and Clinic in Mediation from 1995-2015
*served as the drafter and advisor to a 23 member task force in 1997 that designed and drafted the Wisconsin Special Education Mediation System (Wis. Stat. 767.11)
*administered the Wisconsin Special Education System from 1997-2007, including developing a 25 member mediator roster, a training curriculum, and case assignment system
*served as a senior consultant to the US Department of Education from
1997-2007, speaking nationally on the design of state special education mediation systems
*trained 25 African leaders each year from 1995-2008 in public policy, multi-party consensus building though a USAID grant
*mediated a class action of parents of special education students against the Milwaukee Public School system in 2007
*mediated a case of over $1M accommodations for a student in special education in Michigan
*trained over 500 Milwaukee firefighters in conflict and cultural competency through a Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services grant(FMCS) in
*mediated the restructuring of a health care agency in 2013-14
*mediated a case among four emergency services providers and the City of Milwaukee in 2007
*mediated a case between a small college building a multi-story academic tower and 23 adjacent property owners in 2009
*facilitated the restructuring of an urban housing agency in 2015-17
*served as an independent arbitrator in 2019 in an employment dispute between a union and public educational institution
*established the Institute for Conflict Studies at Cardinal Stritch University and served as its Executive Director, obtaining accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission, in 2019-2020
In addition to the experiences listed above, I have also mediated many more typical contract, landlord-tenant, and personal injury cases. I have also made presentations and conducted trainings for the ABA Section on Dispute Resolution, the Wisconsin Association of Mediators, the Association of Conflict Resolution. and the US Department of Education.
