Barbara J. Walbrink

Headshot_resized-296x300Barb is a mediator and conflict resolution consultant in private practice. She has mediated employment, family, healthcare and tort cases as well as conducting mediation and communication training. Barb has also supervised law student mediation practica in Milwaukee County and Kenosha Wisconsin County Circuit Courts.

In addition to her current practice, Barb offers extensive and unique conflict resolution experience having worked a combined 38 years in the casualty insurance and clinical social work fields. Most recently Barb worked for Travelers Insurance as a Major Case Specialist in the company’s claim subrogation division. Her responsibilities included the prosecution, litigation management, and recovery resolution of third party claims connected with workers’ compensation injury cases evaluated with damages in excess of $250,000. These third-party claims concerned tort liability, product liability, contractual liability, as well as professional malpractice and many cases resulted in multi-million dollar settlements. Barb successfully negotiated recoveries and participated in mediation in many of these cases to achieve resolution.

Barb was also employed with The St. Paul Companies as both a Claim Unit Manager and Major Case Director in the company’s Construction Claim division where her oversight responsibilities included assurance that claim handling was appropriate in terms of jurisdictional compliance, evaluation, service delivery, and resolution. She has also directly handled hundreds of claims primarily in the areas of workers’ compensation and liability.

Prior to her work in the insurance industry, Barb provided direct practice service as a social worker in both hospital and home health settings dealing with patient, family, and provider issues. Her practice areas included direct counseling to patients concerning mental and physical health, as well as care maintenance and funding needs; working with families to address their emotional needs, resolve care disputes, and assist with end of life issues. As the Director of Social Work for Franciscan Home Health, she also worked with medical professionals providing training in patient and family communication.

Barb holds Masters Degrees in Dispute Resolution (MDR) from Marquette University and Social Work (MSW) from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
